Zagan County

Zagan County

… Is situated in the south-west part of the Lubuskie Voivodship, on the border of  Silesian Lowland (Nizina Slaska) and Cat Hills (Gory Kocie). Within the County the Lower Silesian Forests (Bory Dolnoslaskie) spread for many kilometers and where the two tributaries on the left side of the River Bobr (The Kwisa and The Czerna River) begin and flow into the Bobr. The area of the County is 1131 square km, 44 per cent of which is forested. The County has about 85,000 inhabitants in nine communes.
The attraction of the County is a huge area of forests and also forest undergrowth. The area is also a paradise for hunters and fishermen thanks to the wildlife, rivers and water reservoirs. You can see many species of protected birds e.g. cranes, black grouse, and wood grouse.
Interesting examples of plants are, February Daphne, The King Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia Struthiopetris), Hard Shield Fern, Lilly of the Valley, Good Friday Grass, and a natural treasure – an English Oak which is about 760 years old, 28m tall and its circumference is 992cm. It is the third largest oak in Central Europe.
Because of the County’s 12-century old past there are lots of historical treasures, which remind us about this fact.
The most precious historical building is Post-Augustians Building Complex. It consists of a church, a former monastery, a monastery school and the monastery granary.
Kepler, a famous astronomer, worked in the monastery. A reminder of this fact is a small room, decorated with wall paintings concerning astronomy.
A part of the Complex is The Church of the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in the second half of the 14th century. In the refurbished historical library you can find numerous volumes of antique books from the 16th and 17th centuries and also two globes from the 17th century.
An undisputable pearl of the heritage of Zagan Council is Zagan Dukes Palace which was built on the site of a medieval castle. The building is in the River Bobr Valley, surrounded by a picturesque landscape park, set in the first half of the 17th century and its present day shape was formed in the first half of the 19th century.

Near the Park there is a neo-gothic hospital building with a church founded by Dorothea Talleyrand-Perigord. A unique historical object in Zagan is a replica of the God’s Tomb from Jerusalem which was built in 1598.
Szprotawa has a very rich history which goes back to the year 1000 and contains a lot of historical buildings emphasizing the past glamour of the town. Unquestionably The Town Hall building is the most precious object not only in Szprotawa but also of the region, its two towers are very unusual. In Szprotawa in 1000 Boleslaw Chrobry (Polish King) met Otton III, German Emperor at the spot where a Roman church is located today. The Emperor was on a pilgrimage to Saint Wojciech’s Tomb in Gniezno. There is a monument commemorating this event in Iława, a borough of Szprotawa.
Ilowa is a town with a rich chivalric past. Here you can find a palace built in 1626 which originally was a renaissance four-storey building with a tower. It was extended later with a baroque two-storey wing. Next to the palace there are some Secession farm buildings and a landscape park full of character, with abundant number of rhododendrons.
If you plan to visit the Commune, do not forget to see the post-Evangelical octagonal baroque church in Malomice which was built in 1732. The building is covered with a mansard roof with a lantern. Inside there are a few tombstones among which can be found a gothic one from 1414, and some renaissance slabs from the second half of the 16th century with reliefs of the Knights from The Kotwicz and Milicz families.
